The South African Budget 2007 - 2008
|
South African Foreign Trade
As anticipated, South Africa's foreign trade
deficit continued to grow in 2007. So did the
current account deficit. The 2007 trade deficit
reached R69.3 billion, up from R67.1billion
in 2006. Even the record prices (see Economic
Sectors) and export levels of commodities, especially gold, platinum and coal could not
offset the growing import bill, which was fueled
by infrastructure spending and higher oil prices.
The current account deficit, just 2% of GDP a
few years ago, sky rocketed to more than 8%,
the highest on record.
