Akagera National Park Safari in Rwanda

Akagera National Park is one of the 3 Rwanda safari destinations situated in eastern region of Rwanda, along the Tanzanian border. The park was established in 1934 to protect animals and vegetation in three eco-regions: covers 1,200 km² savannah, mountain and swamp. It was named Akagera from the Kagera River which flows along its eastern boundary feeding into several lakes the largest of which is Lake Ihema. It is one of the largest protected wet land areas in Africa.

Akagera national park is dominated by the savannah vegetation thus creating room for Game drives to view a variety of wildlife like elephants, bush bucks, Buffalos, Hippos, zebras, giraffe among others. Due to land shortages, in 1997 the western boundary was re-gazetted and much of the land allocated as farms to returning refugees. Although much of the best savannah grazing land is now outside the park boundaries, what remains of Akagera is some of the most diverse and scenic landscape in Africa.
The park and its lakes are home to one of the highest concentration of Hippopotamus, crocodiles, and so on – the two are the largest world’s reptiles. Currently, Akagera National Park entry is US$ 40 per person per 24 hours – boat cruise on Lake Ihema is US$ 30 per person, single traveler pay high on boat at US$ 60 –thus advisable to book for two people to save some money. There is a proposal to reintroduce lion and black rhino.
