Mt. Mikeno in DR Congo
Mountain Mikeno is a dormant volcanic mountain located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo section of the Virunga Mountains along with Mount Nyiragongo, Mount Nyamuragira, Mount Karisimbi, and Mountain Bisoke. At 4,437 metres (14,557 ft) Mountain Mikeno is the second highest peak in the Virunga Mountains after Karisimbi, and the 13th highest mountain of Africa. Mikeno means “poor” and is so named for its harsh slopes which preclude human habitation.
Mountain Mikeno lies completely within Virunga National Park (home of Gorillas in Democratic Republic of Congo) – Mountain Gorilla are found lingering at the slopes of the mountain. Expeditions to observe Mikeno’s gorillas typically leave from the nearby Bukima Patrol Post.
Mountain mikemo its self is attractive and it is among the best places where tourists can take memorable photos to symbolize the beauty of Democratic Republic of Congo. Mountain Mikemo is the third highest mountain in DR. Congo after Margherita or Mountain Stanley situated on Mountain Rwenzori shared by Uganda and DR Congo. Rwenzori trekking to Mt. Stanley is most popular from Uganda side and requires a minimum of 5 days to get there. On normal hiking speed, most people take 6-7 days to this peak and back. This is the 3rd highest in Africa standing at 5109 M next to Mt. Kenya and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
Mountain Mikemo is not only a tourist attraction but also generates relief rain falls which is formed when most winds hit the mountain and rise over it. When air rises, it forms clouds resulting into relief rain fall. To that note, the mountain has facilitated proper growth of crops hence boosting agriculture.
Democratic Republic of Congo is among the agricultural countries in Africa due to its fertile soils eroded from mountain slopes to the low lands. Fertile soils facilitate proper growth of plants hence high food production.
Mikemo inhabits Gorillas in Congo – as far as tourism is concerned; Gorillas earn the Democratic Republic of Congo a lot of foreign exchanges. Such Gorillas are tracked from the slopes of mount Mikemo, Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamuragira.
Mount Mikemo being the second highest in Virunga, the fact is that it can only be viewed while in Democratic Republic of Congo. Unlike Mountain Karisimbi, Mountain Muhabura, Mountain Sabyinyo and Mountain Gahinga which serves two countries; Rwanda and Uganda OR Rwanda and Democtratic Republic of Congo, Mountain Mikemo is selfish as it’s only found in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Mountain Mikemo offers building materials – stones.
The slopes of mountain Mikemo are covered by vegetation which controls the speed of running water – in other wards, it controls soil erosion.
The mountain also shelters or protects the country from strong winds but instead forms rain fall.
The country is rich in terms of tourism as it’s covered by forest, rivers, water bodies like Lake Kivu among others.
It should however be noted that Democratic Republic of Congo is seasonally instable – this is due to unstable government, large size of the country, large forested areas, Mountains among others. Tourism some times halts its activities when the situation worsens – of course serious warnings or updates are given to the travelers through their embassies.
In case of political instabilities in Congo, Tourist can divert to track Rwanda Mountain Gorillas and view Virunga Volcanoes like Mt. Sabyinyo, Mt. Gahinga, Mt. Bisoke, Mt. Muhabura and Mt. Karisimbi like in DR. Congo.
